WHAT IS AN INTIMACY DIRECTOR?

“An Intimacy Coordinator / Director is a choreographer, an advocate for actors, and a liaison between actors and production for scenes that involve nudity/hyper exposed work, simulated sex acts, and intimate physical contact in tv/ film (IC) or live performance (ID).” (IDC). An IC functions in a similar way that a Stunt Coordinator would on a film/TV set or a Fight Director would in live performance. As the department head, they are in charge of working with the director and creative team to make sure that any stunts are choreographed to capture the best story, and to keep the perfomers safety at the highest priority. Intimacy professionals work under trauma-informed and consent-based practices, which puts the emotional safety and well being of the creative team at the forefront of the process.

WHAT DO I DO AS AN INTIMACY DIRECTOR?

I have trained and continue to train with IDC and others on Consent Forward Practices, focusing on a human first approach to all work within the theatrical sphere. This includes training in gender identity, anti harassment, de-escalation, Anti-Racism/EDI, trauma informed practices, advocating and ally ship for the LGBTQIA+ community, bystander intervention training and certification in Mental Health First Aid.

I advocate for actors, and work as a liaison between production and performers to bring the director's vision to life. I'm the person you want in the room when you need to create moments of magic or mayhem.
